In an attempt to liven up a dreary, rainy weekend we visited our neighborhood Beetle Shop on Saturday. You read right, a store devoted entirely to beetles. It seems they are quite popular pets for kids here in Okinawa. We were prepared to come home with a new house-guest in hand but after seeing the price tags 1,000 to 5,000 yen (around $10- $50) we decided against it! The beetles can also be used in beetle fighting. Two different male beetles are placed on a log. They will battle, trying to push each other off the log, the one to stay on the log is the winner. And here's a quote... "This is a huge source and loss of money to many people, especially in the Ryukyu Islands." Very interesting, but I do think we'll just catch our own bugs (the free kind!) for the time being!
